With a BSc (Hons) in Sport, Health, Exercise and Nutrition from the University of Leeds, Gary started his career coaching professional athletes, including a Team GB archer and Leeds Carnegie RFU in their Premiership season. He then went on to build a thriving personal training business in West Yorkshire, working with a diverse range of clients to achieve their goals and aspirations. Gary met Andy Dodman in early 2010, and they soon saw the opportunity to combine Gary’s boundless enthusiasm and expertise within the health and fitness industry with Andy’s desire to augment workforce health and wellbeing. Since then, Gary and Andy have shared their passion to create Juice, a remarkable and innovative wellbeing offer for staff at The University of Sheffield and beyond.
Gary and Andy practise what they preach, with Gary perhaps taking this to the extreme. When he’s not advising organisations on all things health related, he’s in training for a range of personal challenges. In December 2014, he completed his first Ironman Triathlon in Western Australia, and inexplicably wishes to undertake a second similar event later in 2017. When not competing, he’ll certainly be out on his bike, running, swimming, or lifting heavy things!
Andy combines expertise in Human Resources with a passion for health, wellbeing and engagement. As Director of Human Resources since 2011, Andy has been responsible for overseeing the implementation of the award-winning Juice scheme at The University of Sheffield. He leads the University’s employment strategy for its 7,200 staff and is a member of the University’s Executive Board. Andy also advises other UK and international organisations on a range of HR and employment matters and is currently the Chair of the Russell Group of HR Directors, a collection of the leading 24 research intensive universities in the UK.
Andy was educated at the University of Bath (BSc), the University of Leeds (MBA) and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (FCIPD). His team has received many national awards and accolades for their work, including from the CIPD, HR Excellence, UHR, Stonewall, Opportunity Now and The Guardian. He has appeared in HR Magazine's 'Most Influential Practitioner' list for the past two years.
Andy is an avid runner, cyclist and swimmer and has a penchant for very muddy obstacle courses. Currently he’s an aspiring Ironman with a desire to complete the 226km route faster than Gary.
